Building a local recommendations guide guests will use

Where to eat, walk and visit nearby. How accommodation hosts can build a local guide that guests trust and use, and keep it up to date.

Guest lounge and reception

One of the most common questions hosts hear is "Where should we eat tonight?". Guests trust a local's opinion more than a list of search results, and a good recommendation can make their stay.

Choose, do not list

A guide with fifty places is a directory. A guide with eight places you would send a friend to is a recommendation. Group them simply:

  • Places to eat and drink.
  • Walks and outdoor spots.
  • Things to do on a rainy day.
  • Shops for essentials.

Add the details guests need

  • How far it is, and whether you can walk.
  • Which days it is open.
  • Whether to book ahead.
  • A map link.

Keep it honest

Recommend places you would stand behind. If a local business is a partner, it is fair to say so.

Keep it current

Restaurants close, opening hours change and new places open. Review the guide at the start of each season, and whenever a guest tells you something has changed.

How TAPP helps

Local recommendations can be one of the items on your TAPP page, alongside Wi-Fi and stay information. Guests open it with a tap or scan, and you edit it from your TAPP account whenever something changes.

Questions

How many places should a local guide include?
Usually between six and twelve well-chosen places is more useful than a long list.
Should I include map links?
Yes. A map link saves guests searching for each place.
How often should I update it?
At least at the start of each season, and whenever you hear something has changed.
