What is an NFC business card, and how does it work?

A plain explanation of NFC business cards: how a tap shares your details, which phones work, and what to put on the page behind the card.

People networking at a business event

Paper business cards are easy to lose and impossible to update. An NFC business card works differently: the other person taps it with their phone and your details open on their screen.

How it works

Inside the card is a small NFC chip storing a web link. When someone holds their phone near the card, the phone reads the link and opens the page in its browser. There is no app to install for the person receiving your details.

Which phones work?

Most modern iPhone and Android phones can read NFC. On some Android phones, NFC can be switched off in settings. A QR code printed on the card covers anyone whose phone does not tap.

What to put on the page

  • Your name, role and company.
  • Phone number and email, with an option to save the contact.
  • Links to your website, LinkedIn and calendar.
  • A short line about what you do.

Keep it current

If you change role, number or company, update the page instead of reprinting cards.

Questions

Does the person I give my card to need an app?
No. The tap opens a web page in their phone's browser.
Can I change the details after the card is printed?
Yes, if the card links to a page you can edit. The card stays the same and the page changes.
Is the TAPP Business Card available now?
It is coming soon. Get in touch to hear when it launches.
